NDAA's

2026 Homicide Conference
November 17-19, 2026 | Fort Lauderdale, FL

The Evidence Framework: Building, Testing, and Presenting Homicide Cases That Hold

Homicide cases are not defined by the severity of the crime.
They are defined by the strength—and clarity—of the evidence.

In many cases, the central challenge is not what happened, but how it can be proven. Evidence may be incomplete, contested, invisible, or built on inference. Even strong cases can falter when that reality is not clearly identified and addressed early.

Prosecutors are often asked to move quickly—from facts to theory to trial—without fully diagnosing the evidentiary problem at the center of the case.

That is where cases begin to break down.

Recognizing the evidence problem—and building strategy around it—is essential.
NDAA’s 2026 Homicide Conference is designed to support that work.

This is not a topic-based program.
It is a framework-driven training built around how homicide cases are actually developed, challenged, and presented in court.

Participants will work through a structured approach to prosecution—diagnosing the evidence, building and testing the case, and translating proof for a jury—using real case studies, applied exercises, and expert-led instruction.

What You Will Do in This Program

This program combines targeted instruction with practical application so participants can move beyond information and into strategy.

Throughout the program, you will:

  • Diagnose the core evidentiary challenge in a homicide case before building strategy

  • Build prosecutable cases from incomplete or indirect evidence

  • Use digital, forensic, and circumstantial evidence to strengthen proof and exclude alternatives

  • Navigate contested and conflicting expert testimony with clarity and control

  • Translate complex evidence into clear, persuasive trial narratives

A Room Built for Real Case Work

This program is designed for prosecutors and multidisciplinary partners actively handling homicide cases.

Participants learn alongside peers from across the country, examining how different offices approach similar evidentiary challenges—what holds, what fails, and what strengthens a case over time.

Sessions emphasize decision-making under real conditions, connecting early case assessment to how cases are ultimately presented in court.

You will not just hear what works.
You will practice how cases are built—and how strategy adapts when the evidence is challenging.

Course Structure

Day 1: Diagnosing the Evidence
Shift from facts to framework. Identify the core evidentiary challenge—what is missing, disputed, or must be inferred—and how that shapes every decision that follows.

Day 2: Build and Test the Case
Work through incomplete, invisible, contested, and inferred evidence. Examine how cases are developed, challenged, and strengthened under real-world conditions.

Day 3: Translate and Present the Proof
Focus on trial strategy—opening statements, cross-examination, and closing arguments—ensuring complex evidence is clear, credible, and persuasive to a jury.

Key Topics Include

  • Evidence-based case diagnosis and strategy

  • Building cases with incomplete or fragmented evidence

  • Digital and forensic evidence integration

  • Invisible injury and internal mechanism cases

  • Contested expert testimony and scientific disagreement

  • Proving intent and agreement through inference

  • Witness credibility, cooperation, and risk

  • Opening statements, cross-examination, and closing strategy

  • Translating complex evidence for jury understanding

  • Prosecutors handling homicide and major violent crime cases
