Overview

An office can respond well to an immediate concern and still leave important questions unresolved. Who can approve a change in assignments? Who follows up when the usual supervisor is away? Do people have the time, access, and information to carry out an agreed plan? Repeated gaps can affect safety, performance, and whether people can remain in the work.

Safe by Design brings the series together through an applied prosecutor-office case. Participants examine how an office practice works, develop a practical improvement, test it under pressure or during an absence, and consider mixed results. They then identify an action or recommendation within their own authority. The focus is on practices people can depend on, with clear responsibility and a way to learn from what happens.

What You Will Do in This Program

  • Examine office conditions that affect safety, performance, sustainability, and retention.
  • Distinguish an individual concern from a recurring gap in an office practice.
  • Draft an improvement that identifies responsibility, decision authority, resources, and follow-through.
  • Test whether the proposed practice still works when a key person is unavailable.
  • Review results and decide what to keep, change, or investigate further.
  • Select one action or recommendation you can take forward within your role.

Part of the Safe to Serve Series

Safe by Design is the sixth course in the series and can be taken individually. It connects the earlier learning about demands, recognition, safety, protective factors, and supportive responses to a practical office improvement.

Designed For

Prosecutors, supervisors, and office leaders. Participants do not need office-wide decision-making authority to develop a useful recommendation or identify a step within their role.

Key Topics Include

  • Workload and supervision
  • Communication and authority
  • Threat-response follow-through
  • Backup arrangements
  • Access and resources
  • Organizational learning
  • Practical implementation and review

Take Home Resources

  • Safe by Design Office Toolkit: A practical guide for examining one office practice, separating facts from assumptions, checking responsibility and backup arrangements, and choosing a useful improvement or question to take forward.

  • 30/60/90-Day Action Planner: A working plan for turning a priority into an action or recommendation, identifying needed approval and resources, and reviewing what happens. It accommodates recommendations awaiting approval as well as changes participants can make themselves.
