Overview

Competing assignments, repeated exposure to violence and human suffering, interruptions, and limited recovery time can affect how prosecutors prepare, communicate, and exercise judgment. When work begins to slip, the immediate concern may be visible while the conditions contributing to it remain unclear.

The Weight of the Work helps prosecutors examine those conditions and decide what needs to happen next. Using the science of human performance and realistic prosecution scenarios, participants consider how demands, exposure, resources, recovery, and context interact. They practice testing an explanation against the facts, choosing a response, and identifying which decisions they can make themselves and which require support or authority from someone else.

What You Will Do in This Program

  • Examine a prosecutorial work concern through five conditions: demands, exposure, resources, recovery, and context.
  • Separate what is known from assumptions about why someone is struggling.
  • Consider competing explanations and revise your judgment as new information becomes available.
  • Identify an immediate work need and select a response that addresses it.
  • Prepare a specific request for a decision, resource, or change beyond your authority.
  • Choose a review point to determine whether the response helped or shifted the problem to someone else.
