Spotlight On: APRI’s Juvenile Justice Trainings and Programs: Did You Know…

APRI has developed a database of juvenile programs called the “Juvenile Prosecutors’ Program Compendium.” Funded by a grant from the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention in the U.S. Department of Justice, this Compendium includes information about juvenile programs that are prosecutor-led or for which prosecutors have substantial responsibility or involvement. By searching the database, APRI can provide prompt and useful technical assistance to prosecutors who want to start juvenile justice programs, but do not have the time or resources to start from scratch. If programs matching their requirements are in our electronic Compendium, we can quickly provide relevant program information.

Topics include: Alternative Sentencing, Aftercare, Assessment Centers, Community Prosecution, Cultural Diversity, Curfew, Disproportionate Minority Confinement, Diversion, Drug Courts, Education, Family Violence, Female Offenders, Arson, Gangs, Graffiti, Guns and Firearms Prosecution, House Arrest/Monitoring, Information Sharing, Mental Health, Mentoring, Parental Responsibility, Parenting Programs, Prevention, Prison Programs, Restitution, School Programs, Sex Offenses, Truancy, Underage Drinking, Very Young Offenders, Victim Impact Panels, Victim/Witness Services, and Waiver/Direct Filing.

The Compendium database currently has 220 entries from jurisdictions of all sizes and from almost every state. APRI would like to add to the database. If you have a program in your jurisdiction that you would like us to know about, please complete this form and mail or fax it, along with any pertinent documents to:

Violence and Crime on School Campuses

Has there been a rise in crimes and violence committed on school campuses in your jurisdiction? Has your office seen an increased number of juvenile delinquency cases arising out of conflicts on school grounds? What types of school crimes do you deal with in your jurisdiction? What approaches is your office taking to charge or divert these cases? Has your jurisdiction instituted any programs to decrease the number of school crimes?

Roles for Prosecutors in Early Delinquency Prevention

Is your office part of community efforts to attack juvenile delinquency before it starts? Has your jurisdiction implemented any programs aimed at early intervention or prevention of juvenile delinquency? How do prosecutors create programs to aid in prevention? How have other offices started and maintained effective programs?

APRI is pleased to announce two upcoming special issue workshops that will enable prosecutors from all over the country to take a closer look at these timely issues…

Crime on Campus: A workshop for juvenile prosecutors and policy makers dealing with school violence and crime… Meet with national experts and your colleagues to discuss effective strategies for handling and preventing crime and violence on school campuses. The Crime on Campus Workshop will be facilitated by experts on school safety and experienced juvenile court prosecutors. Participants and speakers will explore unique issues emerging from school campuses that confront juvenile court practitioners. April 25-27, 2000, San Diego, California

Juvenile Delinquency Prevention: A workshop designed to help prosecutors develop and implement effective early intervention and prevention programs… Participate in an interactive course designed to help elected prosecutors and policy-level deputies develop program ideas that they would like to implement in their own jurisdictions. Faculty will include prosecutors, agency administrators and directors of prevention programs nationwide. June 1-3, 2000, San Antonio, Texas
