Winter 2003

A Message from the President of APRI

APRI and NCDA Team for 2003 NDAA Summer Conference

The NDAA summer conference is always a premier event for local prosecutors, bringing together hundreds of prosecutors from across America. This year NDAA conferences have addressed recent developments in such important topics as terrorism and homeland security. The Summer 2003 Conference in scenic Snowmass, Colorado, July 20-23, will provide an opportunity to cover additional topics that may have been overshadowed by these national priorities.

This year, the American Prosecutors Research Institute (APRI) and the National College of District Attorneys (NCDA) will team together to provide practical training on critical issues for participating prosecutors. The distinguished planning committee, selected by NDAA President Dan Alsobrooks, includes Mat Heck of Montgomery County, OH, Bob Honecker of Monmouth County, NJ, and Paul Walsh of Bristol County, MA, along with Dean Bob Fertitta of NCDA and APRI Chief Administrator Steve Dillingham.

Two tracks will be offered throughout the conference. NCDA will organize a series on topics of best practices for prosecutor office management.

APRI trainings will address specialized topics devoted to promoting community safety, including the following:

  • Improving the quality of life in your community;

  • Overview and update on Project Safe Neighborhoods;

  • Drug prosecution, prevention and treatment;

  • Prosecuting impaired driving cases;

  • Guiding principles for juvenile justice;

  • Defending child forensic interviews;

  • Prosecuting on-line crimes against children;

  • Evidence-based prosecution of domestic violence cases;

  • Identity theft and developments in telecommunications fraud;

  • DNA evidence and technology; and

  • Performance measures for prosecution.

The Snowmass/Aspen area is one of the world’s most spectacular and fun-filled mountain environments. In addition to the traditional golf tournament, sports-minded conference participants can look forward to biking and hiking on wilderness trails, trout fishing, white water rafting, rock-climbing, horseback riding and paragliding. History buffs can explore log cabins, ghost towns and museums, while those with more acquisitive inclinations will enjoy the wide variety of unique shops and eateries.

Whatever your interests, whether professional or personal, the NDAA Summer Conference has much to offer. We look forward to seeing you there!
