APRI is in the knowledge business. APRI’s programs strive to build knowledge and to stay on the cutting edge of legislative initiatives, case law developments, and related social research. National symposia and advisory group activities constantly update APRI's insight into the most topical issues.
APRI also is in the information dissemination business. Each program has a commitment to share its acquired knowledge with state and local prosecutors across the nation. The information may be shared at training programs or through publications, including books and newsletters. Technical assistance constitutes another critical information transfer mechanism.
Prosecutors have come to recognize the availability and value of APRI’s technical assistance. In 2002, APRI handled over 4,300 requests for technical assistance, more than 350 per month. In addition to fielding inquiries about training opportunities or requests related to publications, APRI program staff has prepared information packets that cover recurring issues or hot topics. This material is ready to go to the local prosecutors, whether by mail, fax, courier, or e-mail.
More than one-third of the technical assistance requests we receive are far more demanding, requiring new research that may take many hours to complete. The results are then more readily available for the next prosecutor who asks a similar question.
Prosecutors also seem to be visiting the Web site to directly access helpful information. In 2002, 189 technical assistance requests were submitted via the Web site, and in the last six months alone, APRI’s seven newsletters recorded 12,521 hits.
For those readers who have not previously accessed APRI’s technical assistance, there are several options:
