APRI Highlights - Spring 2002
Office of Research and Evaluation
Elaine Nugent, Director
APRI’s Office of Research and Evaluation (OR&E) is currently working on several new projects examining victim/witness issues for prosecutors. One, in particular, focuses on the provision of victim assistance in rural jurisdictions. Prosecutors in smaller, rural jurisdictions face a number of challenges with regard to victim assistance, including, for example, limited financial resources to hire in-house victim/witness assistance coordinators and few community-based service providers. Despite these challenges, many prosecutors have developed innovative strategies for providing assistance to victims, such as internship programs with local colleges and volunteer programs. The OR&E staff will highlight a number of these strategies, along with implementation guidance, in a new guide for prosecutors.
In addition, the OR&E has been working with the Office for Victims of Crime (OVC), U.S. Department of Justice, on the publication of a new comprehensive guide for prosecutors that describes the types of services prosecutor-based victim/witness assistance programs provide. The report will be published by OVC and should be available in mid-2002. The OR&E has also just posted on the APRI Web site a new searchable database of victim/witness programs in prosecutors’ offices.
