The Office of Research & Evaluation (OR&E), working in conjunction with APRI’s Drug Prosecution and Prevention Program (DP3), is embarking on a new effort to document innovative drug programs led by prosecutors. Beyond Convictions, originally published in 1990, was APRI’s first effort to survey the country in search of promising strategies that prosecutors could implement to reduce drug crimes. Since that time, much has changed in the response to drugs and drug crimes.

Prevention efforts have been tested and adjusted; drug treatment efforts have become more comprehensive. Prosecutors have become increasingly involved in efforts to stop drug use among juveniles and to involve the community in addressing the problems associated with street level drug dealing. Also, the complexity of drug cases facing local prosecutors is changing.
To provide prosecutors with state-of-the-art information about how to address drugs and drug crimes, and to capture the changes that have occurred in prosecutorial approaches over the past 15 years, the OR&E will be updating Beyond Convictions over the next year, again searching the country for innovation in drug prosecution and prevention. The new compendium of promising practices will be designed with prosecutors in mind, allowing them to review programs by type of drug, type of program, or target population using a quick reference guide. The compendium will also include detailed descriptions of selected promising practices in each category. OR&E and DP3 expect to release the compendium in 2005.
