Notes from the National College

The National College of District Attorneys will present the 12th Annual National Conference on Domestic Violence in Chicago, on October 27-31. Now in its 12th year of training on this vital area, this is truly a year of reflection. I have had the pleasure to serve as the conference director for the last nine annual conferences. I have seen some of the same attendees every year as well as a sea of new faces. Keeping this in mind, this year’s conference will offer topics for those new to the field as well as those who have been in the trenches for the last several years. This year’s conference will not only offer topics which emphasize the dynamics of these cases and the importance of collaborative team work among all disciplines within the criminal justice community that come into contact with domestic violence victims and their children but also offer sessions for those at the policy level in these agencies. There will be discussion sessions with informal formats that are geared toward problem solving as well as workshops, lectures and demonstrations. The conference also offers an increasingly popular resource center with a wealth of free sample resource materials from over 100 agencies, domestic violence initiatives and governmental departments and corporations. There will be special sessions for attendees from the host state to network and participate in legislative updates. Working together to share, grow and develop workable strategies to increase awareness and decrease domestic violence in our communities is the National College’s goal.
