Notes from the National College
The Career Prosecutor Course
By Patti Sudendorf, Assistant Director of Programs
The National College of District Attorneys has graduated some of prosecution’s most dedicated and talented advocates from our cornerstone program, the Career Prosecutor Course. Building on this rich tradition, we are pleased to announce the 34th offering of the Career Prosecutor Course to those identified as the best and brightest. In the 33 years it has been offered by NCDA, the Career Prosecutor Course has undergone a number of changes due in part to the multitude of advocacy courses offered at the National Advocacy Center.
This year’s course will refocus its programming, addressing issues and strategies relevant to the prosecutor with six or more years of experience, and will be dedicated to honing their prosecutorial skills. If you have identified individuals in your office who have demonstrated the skills and commitment to making prosecution their career, this course would serve them well.
Our presentations are designed to inspire and educate in all areas of concern to the experienced prosecutor including: persuasion, technology, media skills, liability, trial strategy and inherent ethical considerations with respect to each area. Attuned to the needs of the career prosecutor, our workshops serve as brainstorming sessions to foster themes, theories and strategies for that upcoming complex case the prosecutor will bring from his home jurisdiction and share with their peer group.
This year’s offering of the Career Prosecutor Course will be held at the Charleston Doubletree Hotel. Located in the heart of the historic downtown district of Charleston, South Carolina, this hotel is steps away from wonderful restaurants, harbor activities and beautiful antebellum homes. The hotel itself offers spacious rooms and modern amenities with signature southern hospitality. For further information on the Doubletree, please visit their Web site at www.doubletreecharleston.com.
The prosecutor who attends this course should have no less than six years of trial experience in prosecution or equivalent trial experience. Prosecutors who have reached that level of trial work that demonstrates a keen awareness of the issues involved and the types of strategies to employ are essential to the success of these integral discussion groups.
