NATIONAL DISTRICT ATTORNEYS ASSOCIATION JOINS IN RECOGNIZING THE DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE'S NATIONAL METHAMPHETAMINE AWARENESS DAY
ALEXANDRIA, VA November 30, 2006 The National District Attorneys Association (NDAA) is pleased to join with the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) today to bring attention to the devastating impact of methamphetamine (meth) use in America. NDAA is participating in a partnership created by DOJ that also includes a number of federal, state and local governments, as well as with private sector and non-profit entities, including: the U.S. Department of Labor; U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; U.S. Department of Interior; Office of National Drug Control Policy; the Drug Enforcement Administration; the Partnership for a Drug-Free America; Boys and Girls Clubs of America; Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America; Fraternal Order of Police; American Council on Education; National Association of Student Personnel Administrators and the National Panhellenic Conference. NDAA is honored to be part of this important partnership.
The DOJ has developed methamphetamine educational materials and presentations that are available on their website and will be of invaluable assistance to prosecutors and the communities they serve as well as all Americans. NDAA also has a presentation on its website (http://www.ndaa.org/ndaa_tv/video_meth_carlisle_nov_06.html ) that may be used by prosecutors, law enforcement, schools and communities, among others, to help stress the dangers of meth. According to Mathias (Mat) H. Heck, Jr., NDAA’s President and Prosecuting Attorney in Montgomery County, Dayton, OH, “We are encouraging prosecutors across America to work within their communities today by providing educational materials concerning the disturbing and destructive effects of meth.” Additionally, NDAA is presenting a course for prosecutors today concerning methamphetamine at the National Advocacy Center in Columbia, SC, a training facility shared by DOJ and NDAA.
Heck continued, “We often emphasize the importance of programs to rehabilitate those who use meth and other drugs without stressing the great need for effective prevention programs. Meth production and use is spreading throughout America and leaving in its wake addicted children, youth and adults. This is a drug that is so addictive that many of those who use it only once become hooked. It’s a sad fact that meth frequently causes death or permanent injury and its manufacture and use is reaching epidemic proportions. State and local prosecutors across our nation are stepping up their continuing efforts to prevent the use of meth, educate users about rehabilitative programs, and hold meth manufacturers and dealers accountable for their actions.”
The NDAA represents approximately 30,000 prosecutors nationally. State and local prosecutors are responsible for trying more than 95% of all criminal cases in America
