JAMES P. FOX, DISTRICT ATTORNEY IN REDWOOD CITY, SAN MATEO COUNTY, CALIFORNIA IS NEW PRESIDENT-ELECT OFTHE NATIONAL DISTRICT ATTORNEYS ASSOCIATION

August 14, 2006 – Alexandria, VA – The National District Attorneys Association (NDAA) takes pleasure in announcing that James P. Fox, District Attorney in Redwood City, San Mateo County, CA, has unanimously been chosen by his peers to become the Association’s President-Elect at its recent Board of Directors Meeting. Mr. Fox will serve as President-Elect from July 2006 through July 2007, and will become NDAA’s President from July 2007 to July 2008. NDAA represents approximately 30,000 prosecutors nationally. State and local prosecutors are responsible for trying more than 95% of all criminal cases in America.

Mr. Fox was elected and took office as District Attorney of San Mateo County in January 1983 and has been re-elected, without opposition, every four years since then. That, alone, speaks volumes about his integrity and ability to represent the people he serves.

Mr. Fox has a unique and valuable perspective of our criminal justice system, as he has been both a defense attorney and a prosecutor. From 1974 to 1983, while in general practice, he was a member of the Private Defender Panel of the San Mateo County Bar Association which provides for indigent defense services for the County of San Mateo. During this time period, he also served as the City Attorney of Half Moon Bay, CA.

Mr. Fox possesses a wealth of knowledge and experience that he brings to the NDAA. First and foremost, he understands the tremendous responsibility placed upon prosecutors and the need to help people and the media better understand the role of prosecutors. They must seek truth and justice for the innocent victims of crime and their families as well as for those who stand in judgment. As the people’s attorneys, prosecutors are also community leaders who work to ensure a safe environment for those who live within their jurisdiction.

When asked about his new position within NDAA, Mr. Fox said, “I’m both humbled and honored that my peers selected me to be their President-Elect. Prosecutors are facing increasing challenges in the 21st century. We must not only hold criminals accountable for their actions, but we also need to find more creative ways to work with our federal counterparts and state and local legislators in the fight against terrorism. The world is ever changing and we must change with it to ensure the safety of the people we serve. I look forward to meeting the challenges that lie ahead and appreciate being given this opportunity and vote of confidence.”

Mr. Fox has served as a member of the California Bar Association Conference of Delegates and the Commission on Judicial Nominee Evaluations and has been active in both the California District Attorneys Association (CDAA), and the NDAA. He is a past President of CDAA and has served as chairman of the Legislative Committee of that organization since 1990. He is also a past Vice President of NDAA and current co-chairman of the Legislative Committee of NDAA. His other memberships and honors are too numerous to mention. Mr. Fox is married to Bonnie, his wife of 38 years and they are the parents of three adult children and grandparents of four.

According to Tom Charron, Executive Director of NDAA, “Jim Fox is a role model for all prosecutors. Every President of the NDAA has had a positive impact on the association. I’m confident that Jim’s experience and commitment to prosecutorial excellence will greatly benefit the NDAA.”
