MAJOR FUNDRAISING DRIVE INITIATED BY THE NATIONAL DISTRICT ATTORNEYS ASSOCIATION ON BEHALF OF PROSECUTORS IN STATES RAVAGED BY KATRINA WHO ARE COPING WITH MASSIVE DESTRUCTION OF THEIR HOMES AND OFFICES
ALEXANDRIA, VA. Sept. 14, 2005 The National District Attorneys Association (NDAA) has established a special fund to help prosecutors of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama who have suffered devastating personal losses in the wake of hurricane Katrina. The “NDAA Hurricane Katrina Prosecution Relief Fund,” has been established as a relief effort to accept donations from America’s prosecutors, along with others who wish to contribute. NDAA has provided a lead contribution to this fund in the amount of $50,000.
Contributions to this fund will be provided to people, not institutions. NDAA is specifically allowing the funds to be used not only for the prosecuting attorneys, but also for members of the support staff who are equally important to the success of the office missions. According to Paul A. Logli, President of NDAA and State’s Attorney in Winnebago County, IL, “NDAA will work with the prosecutor associations in the affected states to help us identify those who work in prosecution offices and are most in need, and direct our contributions to them. Our goal is to provide funds to individuals that are large enough to make a difference in their lives and help them recover from the horrendous effects of Katrina.”
In normal times, prosecutors and their staff work under very difficult circumstances given the size of their caseloads and the limited resources available to them. Now, in the aftermath of the storm, they are not only coping with substantial personal challenges, but are also trying to do a tough job in the midst of a destroyed or heavily damaged criminal justice infrastructure.
Anyone may make a contribution to this fundraising effort. Those wishing to do so should send a check payable to the “NDAA Hurricane Katrina Prosecution Relief Fund,” NDAA, 44 Canal Center Plaza, Suite 110, Alexandria, VA 22314 -- attention: George Ross.
Logli concluded, “While untold numbers of people have suffered, and hundreds have died, this disaster has proven, once again, that Americans are great and caring people. Speaking on behalf of NDAA, our thoughts and prayers are with all victims of hurricane Katrina.”
NDAA is the only association in the United States that represents state and local prosecutors. It represents approximately 30,000 prosecutors nationwide. More than 95% of all crimes committed in the United States are prosecuted by local prosecutors. This is NDAA’s 55th year of dedicated service to America’s prosecutors.
