GOVERNOR BILL RICHARDSON AND UNITED STATES ATTORNEY GENERAL ALBERTO R. GONZALES FEATURED SPEAKERS AT THE NATIONAL DISTRICT ATTORNEYS ASSOCIATION’S 2006 ANNUAL SUMMER CONFERENCE

SANTA FE, NM – July 31, 2006 – The National District Attorneys Association’s (NDAA) 2006 Summer Conference that draws prosecutors from across America will be held July 31st through August 2nd at the Eldorado Hotel and Spa, 309 West San Francisco Street in Santa Fe.

“We are honored and privileged to have Governor Bill Richardson and Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales as featured speakers on July 31st. Governor Richardson will open the Conference from 9:15 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. and Attorney General Gonzales will speak from 9:45 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.” said Tom Charron, Executive Director of NDAA.

NDAA’s Awards Luncheon will take place on July 31st from 12:30 to 2:00 p.m. In keeping with tradition, NDAA’s incoming President, Mathias (Mat) H. Heck, Jr. – Prosecuting Attorney in Montgomery County, OH -- will receive the Presidential Gavel from outgoing President, Paul A. Logli – State’s Attorney in Winnebago County, IL. Mr. Heck will serve as the NDAA President from July 2006 to July 2007.

The NDAA Conference will focus on issues such as: cold cases; keeping America safe from terrorism; the CSI effect and juror expectations; cross-examination strategies; how to deliver closing arguments; and, how district attorneys can operate effectively on shoestring budgets.

Incoming President Mat Heck said, “It is a privilege for me to be elected by my colleagues to serve as NDAA’s President. NDAA provides prosecutors with a forum to meet, share ideas and develop initiatives to make our country safer. It is the voice of America’s prosecutors. I pledge to build upon the successes of those who have served before me and to create and implement meaningful initiatives that address issues such as recruiting and retaining the best and brightest attorneys, combating witness intimidation, family violence, child abuse and elder abuse. Being a prosecutor is an awesome responsibility. Prosecutors are the people’s attorneys and are charged with seeking truth and justice. The NDAA plays a pivotal role in helping prosecutors find smarter and better ways to do their jobs and help the communities they serve. I’m grateful to have been elected as its president.”

NDAA has over 7,000 members who represent approximately 30,000 prosecutors nationwide. More than 95% of all crimes committed in America are prosecuted by state and local prosecutors. This conference marks NDAA’s 56th year of dedicated service to our nation’s prosecutors.
