JAMES P. FOX BECOMES NEW PRESIDENT OF THE NATIONAL DISTRICT ATTORNEYS ASSOCIATION
ALEXANDRIA, VA August 1, 2007 The Honorable James P. Fox, District Attorney in Redwood City, San Mateo County, CA is the new President of the National District Attorneys Association (NDAA).
NDAA’s Presidential Gavel was handed over to Mr. Fox by outgoing NDAA President Mathias H. Heck, Jr., Prosecuting Attorney in Montgomery County (Dayton) OH. Mr. Fox began his term as NDAA President on July 30, 2007, at NDAA’s Summer Conference in Portland, OR, and his term will end in July 2008. He is distinctly qualified for this position. He has extensive experience as both a defense attorney and as a prosecutor. From 1970 to 1973 he was a Deputy District Attorney in the Criminal Division of the San Mateo County District Attorney’s office. And, from January 1974 to December 1982, he was a defense attorney and City Attorney for Half Moon Bay, CA. In June 1982, he was elected District Attorney of San Mateo, CA and he assumed that office in January 1983. The fact that he has been re-elected, without opposition, every four years clearly indicates that the residents of San Mateo, CA hold him in high esteem and value his commitment to protect them and to hold criminals accountable for their actions.
Mr. Fox said, “I’m grateful to my peers for having confidence in my ability to serve as NDAA’s President. The 21st Century roared into our lives and changed the way we live. We could never have imagined the dangers that we all face because of terrorism at home and throughout the world. Prosecutors, who are held accountable for seeking truth and justice in our criminal justice system both for the accuser and the accused, have accepted greater and expanded responsibilities as we work with our Federal and state counterparts to keep America and our communities safe. I welcome this opportunity and will work diligently with our nation’s prosecutors, local, state and federal legislators and agencies, as well as the media, to forge partnerships and develop innovative ways to enhance our system of justice and protect the people we serve.”
Mr. Fox was a member of the Private Defender Panel of the San Mateo County Bar Association. He has served as a member of the California Bar Association Conference of Delegates and the commission on Judicial Nominee Evaluations. He has been active in both the California District Attorneys Association (CDAA) and the NDAA. He is a past President of CDAA and has served as chairman of the Legislative Committee of that organization since 1990. Additionally, he has served as a member of the Criminal Law Advisory Committee to the CA Judicial Council since 1994 and is also a member of the CA Commission on the Fair Administration of Justice since 2004. Mr. Fox is also a Past Vice President of the NDAA and current co-chairman of the Legislative Committee of NDAA. He has memberships and has received honors that are far too numerous to mention. He is married to Bonnie, his wife of 39 years, and they are the parents of three adult children and proud grandparents of four.
Fox concluded, “Being a prosecutor is the best job in the world and I thank the NDAA Board of Directors for placing their trust in me.”
NDAA has approximately 7,000 members who represent about 30,000 prosecutors nationally. State and local prosecutors are responsible for prosecuting more than 95% of all criminal cases in America.
