MARY GALVIN, HIGHLY EXPERIENCED STATE’S ATTORNEY IN MILFORD, CT SELECTED TO BECOME THE NEW DEAN OF THE NATIONAL COLLEGE OF DISTRICT ATTORNEYS AT THE NATIONAL ADVOCACY CENTER IN COLUMBIA, SC

ALEXANDRIA, VA – April 11, 2006 – The National District Attorneys Association, NDAA, is pleased to announce that Mary Galvin, State’s Attorney in Milford, CT, has been selected to become the new Dean of the National College of District Attorneys (NCDA) at the Ernest F. Hollings National Advocacy Center (the Center) on July 1, 2006. The Center is a partnership between the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the NDAA. Ms. Galvin will have oversight of the staff and training programs designed for America’s state and local prosecutors.

Both NCDA and the Center are located on the campus of the University of South Carolina. The Center opened its doors, on April 23, 1998, to provide state-of-the-art training to America’s prosecutors. Creation of the Center marked the first time that training of our nation’s federal, state and local prosecutors was to be conducted at a cooperatively staffed and operated facility. More than 10,000 participants attend courses at the Center, annually.

Ms. Galvin comes to the NCDA and the Center with a wealth of knowledge and experience. She has been State’s Attorney in the Ansonia-Milford Judicial District in Connecticut since 1987 and a prosecutor since 1975. Her academic accomplishments are too numerous to mention, but some of the highlights are: since 1981 she has taught Trial Practice at Yale University School Law; is an Adjunct Professor at the University of New Haven; is a member of the Faculty and a Faculty Advisor for the NCDA; and, is the Assistant Treasurer and member of the Board of Directors of NDAA. Additionally, from 2003 to 2005, Ms. Galvin was chair of the Center’s Oversight Board. When asked about her selection to these new positions, Ms. Galvin said, “It is a great honor to be selected to become the Dean of NCDA at the National Advocacy Center. I welcome the challenge and opportunity to help strengthen the abilities of prosecutors to keep America safe and hold criminals accountable for their actions. However, I will deeply miss my staff and those within the communities I’ve served here in Connecticut. Being a prosecutor is the best job in the world, and I want to thank those within my jurisdiction for their support and friendship.”

Thomas J. Charron, Executive Director of NDAA, said that, “Mary’s experience as a State’s Attorney, along with her enviable academic and professional background, make her eminently qualified to become the new Dean of NCDA. She possesses the leadership, talent and knowledge to help create and promote successful training initiatives and programs that will enhance the knowledge and abilities of all state and local prosecutors who come to the National Advocacy Center and the NCDA.”

NDAA is the nation’s largest organization representing prosecutors. It has approximately 7,000 members who represent about 30,000 prosecutors. More than 95% of all criminal cases are tried by America’s state and local prosecutors.
