TRAINING CONCERNING INVESTIGATION AND PROSECUTION OF COMPUTER FACILITATED CHILD ABUSE CONDUCTED BY AMERICAN PROSECUTORS RESEARCH INSTITUTE

SACRAMENTO, CA – June 10, 2001 - Did you know that sexual predators will groom children around the country via the internet, and that computers can be the instrument through which some of America’s children experience horrors that may forever change their lives by causing severe mental and physical damage as well as, in the most severe cases, even death? Our children need to be protected against such crimes. SAFETY NET, a multi-disciplinary course in the investigation and prosecution of computer facilitated child sexual abuse is being held by the American Prosecutors Research Institute (APRI) through its National Center for Prosecution of Child Abuse (NCPCA) on June 11 – 15 at the SEARCH facility near Sacramento.

These cases pose legal and technical challenges that law enforcement officials must confront. SAFETY NET provides child abuse professionals with cutting edge training and is designed to help them learn valuable investigation and computer analysis techniques. It offers state and local prosecutors, investigators and computer forensic examiners hands-on training and model protocols, plus techniques for the effective presentation of electronic evidence in the courtroom. It is presented in collaboration with SEARCH, a national Criminal Justice Computer Laboratory and Training Center that will provide the training facilities for the course.

Officials from the Mexican government, who are working to create a federal cyber crimes unit in Mexico, will be present at this conference. Generally, SAFETY NET courses are limited to 20 students. Typically, there are over 200 applications for each course.

“This is the only multi-disciplinary training in the area of cyber facilitated sexual exploitation,” said Susan Kreston, Deputy Director of NCPCA and coordinator of the conference. “The goal is to teach trainees about the important impact each of their jobs has on the successful investigation and prosecution of this new and dangerous form of child abuse.”

APRI is the research, training and technical assistance affiliate of the National District Attorneys Association (NDAA). NDAA represents over 30,000 local prosecutors in 2,700 jurisdictions across America who prosecute more than 95% of the nation’s criminal cases.
