CHILD ABDUCTION ISSUES DISCUSSED AT TRAINING FOR PROSECUTORS

NEW ORLEANS – July 6, 2001 – In America, there are an estimated 114,600 attempted abductions of children by non-family members each year; 4,000 of these attempts are successful. Of the 4,000 children abducted by non-family members, 200 to 300 are taken by strangers. Tragically, approximately 100 of the children abducted by strangers are murdered and of those, 65% are dead within the first three hours of the abduction. Additionally, over 350,000 children are abducted by a parent annually. “Investigation and Prosecution of Child Abduction,” an in-depth course presented by the American Prosecutors Research Institute’s (APRI) National Center for Prosecution of Child Abuse (NCPCA) will train prosecutors how to handle these challenging cases on July 9-13, at the Maison Dupuy Hotel in the French Quarter.

The damage inflicted on children by abduction and the violent circumstance in which it often occurs have increased the demand for skilled professionals to investigate and try these complex cases. Prosecutors and law enforcement officers are responsible for leadership in responding to abductions at the local, state, national and international levels.

Trainees will learn about effective investigative and prosecution techniques such as prosecuting international child abduction, on-line luring and abduction, using the victim/witness advocate, investigative techniques, out of state recovery, investigating and prosecuting stranger abductions, pre-trial practice, and ethics and liability. This is the only course in the United States that addresses such a wide variety of issues concerning child abduction.

APRI is the research, training and technical assistance affiliate of the National District Attorneys Association (NDAA). NDAA, with approximately 7,000 members, represents over 30,000 local prosecutors in 2,700 jurisdictions across America - who prosecute more than 95% of the nation’s criminal cases.
