NATION’S PROSECUTORS ATTEND 2005 CAPITAL CONFERENCE
WASHINGTON, D.C. February 12, 2005 The National District Attorneys Association (NDAA) is holding its 2005 Capital Conference on February 13 15, 2005, at the Loews L’Enfant Plaza Hotel, 480 L’Enfant Plaza. The purpose of the conference is to provide prosecutors an opportunity to share information, discuss the changing role of prosecutors and meet with members of Congress and other prominent government officials.
Paul F. Walsh, Jr., district attorney for Bristol County, MA and president of NDAA said, “Now more than ever district attorneys need Washington’s support. Celebrity trials turn our business into entertainment; CSI type television shows try to persuade viewers that our job of bringing murderers to justice is quick and easy. Innocence projects portray DAs as routinely convicting innocents and prosecutors’ budgets face their fifth consecutive year of cuts. The challenge that faced DAs before September 11 have not gone away, indeed they have increased. For this reason, this year’s NDAA Capital Conference will be a “working meeting.” Among the guest speakers are Senator Chuck Hagel, Senator Patrick Leahy, Congressman Ted Poe and John Elwood, deputy solicitor general.
Established in 1950, NDAA was formed in response to crime and the need for community protection. NDAA has a membership of approximately 7,000, who represent over 30,000 prosecutors. NDAA is the nation’s only organization representing local prosecuting attorneys who handle about 95% of all criminal cases and 99% of cases involving violent crime in America. Establishing the truth, ensuring that justice prevails and protecting victims of crime is the mantra of those who serve as our local prosecutors.
