THE PHOTO on the left shows a young David Barber (NDAA vice president and district attorney of the 10th Judicial Circuit, Birmingham, Alabama) in his role as a military policeman in the army National Guard in the late 1960s. He later transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve, graduated from law school, transferred to the JAG Corps and received several promotions along the way. This summer, Colonel Barber retired from the army reserves after more than 36 years of military service. In his last assignment, Barber served as the commander and chief judge advocate of the 150th JAG Detachment, Alexandria, Virginia.
Former Midland (Michigan) Prosecuting Attorney Norm Donker was presented the William E. Delhey Prosecution Service Award in recognition of his stellar prosecution career at the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan's 78th Annual Conference held July 27-30, 2005. Calhoun Prosecuting Attorney John Hallacy and Oakland Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Marilyn Day were the first-ever prosecutors to receive Michigan's MADD Life Saver Award.
Former District Attorney and Louisiana District Attorneys Association Past President Morgan Goudeau was inducted into the Louisiana Justice Hall of Fame on Saturday, July 16, 2005. Ceremonies were held at the Louisiana State Penitentiary Museum.
In Washington D.C. in July, Rick Unklesbay received the Association of Government Attorneys in Capital Litigation (AGACL) Award for Outstanding Trial Advocacy in Capital Cases. Unklesbay has tried more than 90 homicides, including several death penalty cases. Additionally, he is the recipient of the Arizona Prosecuting Attorneys Advisory Council 2005 Felony Prosecutor of the Year award.
Deputy County Attorney Richard Wintory was honored by the Arizona Narcotics Officers Association (ANOA) as their 2005 Narcotic Prosecutor of the Year. Richard is assigned to the Pima County High Intensity Drug Trafficking Center and works directly with the Counter Narcotics Alliance.
DEATH NOTICE
John A. Swayne, Clearwater County (Idaho) prosecutor, community leader, and family man died June 28, 2005, at the age of 60. A 1976 University of Idaho Law School graduate, John accepted a position as a Clearwater County deputy prosecutor that same year. He was elected to the position of county prosecutor in 1987. He served in that capacity for the remainder of his life.
