Assistant City Prosecutor Bill Solomon was recently named Arizona Misdemeanor Prosecutor of the Year by the Arizona Prosecuting Attorneys’ Advisory Council for writing the state’s brief addressing concerns with inconsistent guidelines for misdemeanor jury trials. Defense attorneys had attempted to extend the right to jury trial for misdemeanor offenses. Prosecutors opposed these attempts and sought a simpler standard. The court reevaluated and modified its standard for jury trial eligibility, which is expected to affect every misdemeanor prosecutor in Arizona.

Bill Souder, Criminal District Attorney in Lubbock, Texas, was recently appointed a district judge.

Douglas W. Herndon, former chief deputy district attorney with the Nevada Clark County District Attorney’s Office (Las Vegas) in charge of the Special Victims Unit was recently appointed state district court judge by Governor Kenny Guinn.

The Alabama District Attorneys Association (ADAA) named Nick Abbott its 2004 District Attorney of the Year at its Annual 2005 Summer Conference. Mr. Abbott is the immediate past president of the ADAA and the district attorney of Lee County, a position he was elected to in 1999.

Mike Wenk, Hays County (Texas) criminal district attorney, and Linda Mace, the victim assistance coordinator, received the Danny Hill Award for an outstanding prosecutor upholding victims’ rights at the Texas Crime Victims Clearinghouse annual meeting.

Lee Carter, senior deputy district attorney for Santa Barbara County (California), was recently named the California District Attorneys Association’s (CDAA) Instructor of the Year. A prosecutor since 1987, Carter has been teaching for CDAA for almost a decade.

Suzanne Gazzaniga, a nine-year veteran of the Placer County (California) District Attorney’s Office, has been named the agency’s Prosecutor of the Year. District Attorney Brad Fenocchio said Gazzaniga, 41, was selected based on her work ethic, integrity and overall excellence in the prosecution of criminal cases. Gazzaniga is also past recipient of the California Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award for Elder Abuse Prosecution (2003).
