Karen Bahrman, who started her prosecution career as a summer intern in the offices of the Prosecuting Attorneys Association of Michigan while a student at the Detroit College of Law, is the new prosecuting attorney in Alger County (Munising), Michigan. After law school graduation, Bahrman served for six years as assistant prosecuting attorney in Marquette County and for the last 16 years had been chief assistant prosecuting attorney in Delta County (Esanaba). In her new position, she succeeds Mark Luoma, who was elected to a district court judgeship.

James Jessup is Michigan’s new Ontonagon County prosecuting attorney, replacing Jay Finch who took a position as tribal prosecutor for the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Chippewa Indians.

The new Montmorency County prosecutor in Michigan is Terrie Case. She was previously in private practice and has also served as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Monroe County.

Kalamazoo County Prosecutor James Gregart recently returned from Estonia where he helped that country’s fledging government develop a new criminal justice system. Chosen by the U.S. Department of State, Gregart offered recommendations on how a prosecutor’s office should be run. Interestingly enough, Gregart is of Lithuanian descent.

Jim Backstrom, Dakota County attorney, was recently selected as one of Minnesota’s top lawyers of 2002 by the Minnesota Lawyer.

Deena Bennett, deputy Riverside County (California) DA assigned to the Sexual Assault Child Abuse Unit, was a contestant/participant in the CBS show “Survivor.” A versatile athlete, in her off-hours she has participated in triathlons, adventure racing, rock climbing, mountain biking, softball, soccer, basketball and scuba-diving the Great Barrier Reef. On the job, her warning is: “If you hurt, abuse or kill a child, I am your worst nightmare.”

Joseph R. (Joe) Koenig, former prosecuting attorney of Indiana’s 9th Judicial Circuit (Columbus), has been appointed by Indiana Gov. Frank O’Bannon to head the new Indiana Department of Gaming Research, created by the state legislature in a special session last year. Koenig was an active NDAA member, serving on the Board of Directors and also most recently on the Executive Committee.

Missouri has a bumper crop of 30 new prosecuting attorneys.
