Wayne County (Indiana) Prosecutor David Kolger has been appointed a Wayne County circuit court judge by Governor Mitch Daniels effective March 21, 2005.
Julie Wright, assistant district attorney in Bexar County (Texas), was recently honored with MADD's Award of Excellence from the Greater Alamo Area chapter in recognition of her five-year tenure as head of the Bexar County DA's DWI Task Force. ADA Wright was specifically cited for her dedication, expertise, compassion and empathy in trying these difficult and challenging cases.
Washington County (Oregon) Deputy District Attorney Deena Ryerson was selected DUII Prosecutor-of-the-Year for 2004 for her exemplary dedication and commitment to the prosecution of individuals who drive while under the influence of intoxicants. ADA Ryerson was honored at a luncheon awards ceremony during the annual Impaired Driving Training Conference held April 16, 2005.
District Attorney Lawrence Friedman (Genesee County, New York) received the 2004 New York State Bar Association's Distinguished Service in Law-Related Education Award for his longstanding commitment to educating children about the legal system and the role that law plays in their lives. DA Friedman works with children of all ages and is currently involved in a new program directed at high school students in which the students observe a real criminal trial, deliberate as "shadow jurors," and reach a verdict, all while the actual jury is doing the same thing.
Kings County (New York) Assistant District Attorney Wanda Lucibello was recently honored at the "Governor's 2004 justice, Freedom, and Courage Awards to End Domestic Violence" as recipient of the justice Award in recognition of her efforts to prevent domestic violence, protect domestic violence victims, and hold offenders accountable for their actions. Providing victims with comprehensive access to services is one of ADA Lucibello's primary goals.
The Office of Fulton County (Atlanta) District Attorney Paul Howard recently co-hosted, along with the City of Atlanta Police Department and the FBI's Atlanta office, the first-ever symposium on "Defeating the Gay Panic Defense." Held from February 23-25, 2005, speakers included National District Attorneys Association Executive Director Thomas Charron, former Laramie (Wyoming) Police Chief Dave O'Malley, and Chatham County (Savannah, Georgia) District Attorney Spencer Lawton. The seminar presented the first Ahmed Dabarran Award to Chief O'Malley, the lead detective in the Matthew Shepard murder case. The award was nanied for Ahmed Dabarran, a Fulton County prosecutor murdered in 2001 whose killer was acquitted at a trial in which the "gay panic defense" was raised.
