The National District Attorneys Association is the oldest and largest professional organization representing criminal prosecutors in the world. Its members come from the offices of District Attorneys, State's Attorneys, Attorneys General and county and city prosecutors with responsibility for prosecuting criminal violations in every State and territory of the United States. Its purposes are:
  • to foster and maintain the honor and integrity of the prosecuting attorneys of the United States in both large and small jurisdictions by whatever title such attorneys may be known;

  • to improve and to facilitate the administration of justice in the United States;

  • to promote the study of the law and research therein, the diffusion of knowledge thereof and the continuing education of prosecuting attorneys, lawyers, law enforcement personnel, and other members of the interested public by various means including, but not limited to, arranging seminars and fostering periodic conventions or meetings for the discussion and solution of legal problems affecting the public interest in the administration of justice;

  • to cause to be published and to distribute addresses, reports, treatises, and other literary works on legal subjects or other related subjects;

  • and to operate the National College of District Attorneys (the "College"), which has been sponsored by the corporation since 1969, as the Education Division of the corporation to conduct, direct and coordinate training for the corporation to operate the American Prosecutor's Research Institute (the "Institute") as the Research and Development Division of the corporation. The mission of the Institute is to support the objectives of NDAA by providing to state and local prosecutors knowledge, skills and support to ensure that justice is done and the public safety rights of all are safeguarded. To accomplish this mission, the Institute serves as a nationwide, interdisciplinary resource center for research, and development, technical assistance, training and publications reflecting the highest standards and cutting-edge practices of the prosecutorial profession.

The NDAA was formed in 1950 by local prosecutors to give a focal point to advance their causes and issues at the National level. NDAA representatives regularly meet with the Department of Justice, members of Congress and other national associations to represent the views of prosecutors to influence Federal and national policies and programs which impact law enforcement and prosecution.

The NDAA is governed by a Board of Directors which is made up of State Directors appointed to the Board by the prosecuting associations of the States, current and past officers of the Association. The Officers are chosen by the Board annually to govern the NDAA; they are the President, President-elect, Treasurer, Assistant treasurer, Secretary, Assistant Secretary, and ten vice-presidents. The outgoing President becomes the Chairman of the Board.

The NDAA is headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, along with the American Prosecutors Research Institute. The training division, the National College of District Attorneys, is located in Columbia, South Carolina and manages the National Advocacy Center. The NDAA manages the National Center for the Prosecution of Child Abuse on the campus of Winona State University in Minnesota.

The NDAA has the following committees: Audit, Crime Control and Drug Enforcement Committee, Ethics and Services Committee, Finance, Juvenile Justice and Family Law Committee, Legislation Committee, Membership, Metropolitan Prosecutors Committee, National Committee, Nominating, Science and Technology Committee and Media and Communications and Corrections and Re-entry.
