John R. Justice Loan Repayment Program for Prosecutors and Public Defenders

Receiving funding for the third consecutive year, the John R. Justice Loan Forgiveness program received $4 million in federal funding this past November through the Department of Justice’s budget for FY 2012. While the program did take a 50 percent cut in funding from FY’11 funding levels, all state and local criminal justice assistance programs administered through the Justice Department have taken major hits during this time of shrinking budget dollars—with many popular programs being eliminated altogether during the past several budget cycles. NDAA continues to work closely with Congressional leaders, the Department of Justice, ABA and criminal defender groups to preserve funding for this program for years to come.
