Prosecuting the Impaired Driver: DUI/DWI Cases
Location: National Advocacy Center/On-Line Application
Course Date: July 14-18, 2008
Course Number: 01-08-IDR
Deadline: May 9, 2008
This four day trial advocacy course focuses on developing courtroom skills of the new prosecutor. Prosecuting the Impaired Driver builds a prosecutor’s skills in trying an alcohol-related impaired driving case, including a brief overview of drugs other than alcohol. The training includes a discussion of the role of the prosecutor in both alcohol-impaired driving cases and community safety and covers standardized field sobriety tests, the pharmacology of alcohol and chemical testing. Experienced prosecutors who serve as faculty conduct interactive sessions that address how to prepare and present the state’s case during trial. Each participant prosecutes a ‘case,’ is critiqued on his/her ‘live’ performance, and given an opportunity to view himself/herself on videotape. Throughout every stage of the course, participants receive direct feedback on their courtroom skills with assistance in how to compose more persuasive arguments and deliver more dynamic presentations.
Who Should Apply?
- Prosecutors with an experience level of three years or less, or prosecutors new to trying impaired driving cases before juries.
