DNA True Identity offers prosecutors a solid foundation in the basic science of DNA and the practical application of DNA evidence in the courtroom. The course emphasizes the coordination between the prosecutor and the DNA analyst that is crucial to properly interpret and apply DNA evidence in any given criminal case. The course brings the abstract and often confusing application of DNA evidence to life through case scenarios taught in tandem by nationally recognized experts in DNA typing and prosecution. This is a fast-paced course which may begin as a DNA review for some prosecutors, but then moves quickly to address current and complicated DNA topics. Topics include:

  • Identification, Collection and Submission of DNA Evidence
  • Nuclear, Mitochondrial and Y-STR Analysis
  • Admissibility of DNA Evidence and Expert Scientific Testimony
  • Effective Cross-Examination of Defense Expert Witnesses

  • Understanding and Using Statistics
  • Post-Conviction Case Considerations

Who Should Apply

  • Prosecutors whose case load includes DNA-related evidence.
  • Prosecutors with little or no prior DNA experience are encouraged to attend and will be provided material to review prior to attending the course.
