Toddler beaten and unconscious. Infant found starved. Child shaken to death.
These are all too familiar headlines about child homicides and the tragic consequences of child physical abuse and neglect. During 2005, some 1,460 American children died from abuse or neglect. Approximately 899,000 children were found to be victims of child abuse or neglect.
These staggering statistics undermine the true extent of the problem. The actual number of child abuse homicides is far higher, since many deaths are mistakenly labeled as"accidental," "natural causes," "SIDS" or "unexplained."
Successful investigations and prosecutions are possible when professionals thoroughly understand the complex issues involved in child homicide and physical abuse cases. The implementation of an effective protocol and multidisciplinary team approach is the basis for an effective investigation. Professionals need to understand the biomechanics of inflicted injuries in order to recognize a false caretaker history, collect pertinent evidence, document suspicious injuries and identify potential perpetrators. Professionals must understand the mechanism, the amount of force, and the timing of the infliction of injury to confront conflicting medical opinions and overcome untrue defenses at trial. Professionals must recognize the dynamics and meet the challenge of convincing jurors and judges that "loving" caretakers are capable of abusing their children in vicious and horrific ways.
The Investigation and Prosecution of Child Fatalities and Physical Abuse offers participants the knowledge necessary to overcome the obstacles through presentations by national experts in medicine, forensic investigation and prosecution. Participants will gain an understanding of:
- The causes of abuse-related injuries and death
- A variety of medical evidence and techniques
- Suspect interviewing and crime scene investigation
- Effective prosecution strategies
- Countering defense strategies
- Evidence collection and documentation
